Christmas Fair: Saturday 6 December, midday-2pm

Thank you to everyone for bringing in Non-Uniform Day tombola donations for the Christmas Fair!

Secondhand donations, eg. clean/good condition clothes/uniform, books, toys, DVDs etc can be brought in 1-5 December.

Baking for the cake stall can be brought in on Friday 5 December or on the day if you're coming in early to help out.

There's no such thing as too many volunteers to help with the fair, so please get in touch if you're able to help out: info@friendsofwestjesmond.co.uk - thank you!

Get your Christmas shopping done in one lovely evening!

Yes, it’s only a few weeks until Christmas, but worry not, you can do your shopping at our ever-popular Christmas Shopping Evening on Wednesday 26 November! Ticket forms can be downloaded HERE.

Children's Christmas Cards

Your child(ren) will hopefully have brought home a beautiful Christmas card design and order form recently.

If you would like to order any Christmas cards in your child’s design (and, BTW, the mugs make lovely presents too!), please return your completed order form and cheque (made payable to Friends of West Jesmond Primary School) in a sealed envelope marked “Christmas cards” to your class teacher no later than Thursday 13 November.

Got something to sell?

If you have something you would like to sell and you think fellow-parents might be your target buyers, you can now advertise it at school.
We now have our very own 'Glue Tree' advertising board.  It's located (in a lovely tomato red, so you can't miss it!) on the noticeboard by the covered play area and will operate in much the same way as putting a card in a shop window.

Here's how it works:

  1. you write your advert which should be roughly A6 size (a postcard or index card is fine)
  2. please include your contact details, eg.name and mobile/email
  3. put the advert plus payment into an envelope marked “Friends Glue Tree”
and hand to your class teacher or directly to the office.
  • we ask for a donation of £5 per advert (cheques payable to 'The Friends of West Jesmond Primary School' or cash).
  • The advert will be on display for a period of two weeks.

Disclaimer: All advertising on the Glue Tree is solely between the seller and purchaser and goods sold/purchased must be arranged off the school premises.

Nominate a charity

Thank you to everyone who supported our Macmillan Coffee Morning last week.  Together we raised £131.60 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Many of you commented on how much you enjoyed the coffee morning and suggested we might have one more often.  We thought, therefore, that we might host a charity coffee morning and second-hand uniform sale once a term and raise money for a charity of your choice.  If you would like to nominate a charity to benefit from our next coffee morning, please email the Friends.  We will draw up a list and, depending on how many there are, either put it to a vote or do a draw.

Dates for your diary:

Quiz and Curry Night - 17th October, 8-10pm (babysitter-friendly!).  Download ticket form here.
·         Allotment Day and BBQ – Sunday 19 October, 10am-4pm.
The last BBQ was very popular, so we’re doing it again!  Food will be provided by The Friends in return for your labour and companionship whilst giving the school allotment a winter tidy up.  This is a great family day out and gives your children the chance to have fun with their friends outside.

  • coming along and bringing your friends - it's in the school hall after drop off

Join in

The date for the Friends of West Jesmond AGM is Tuesday 23 September, 6pm at school.  It will be as brief as possible and is very informal.

Please come along if you would like to put yourself forward for a position on the committee or are just interested in taking an active part in school life through the Friends (NB. any amount of time you can give is appreciated – you don’t have to become totally immersed!).

Positions available are:

  • Chair
  • Vice Chair
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary
If you would like to go for one of the above positions, but don’t fancy taking on too much, fear not, they can all be done as job-shares. Most of the people who are currently involved with the Friends work full or part time.

Alternatively, you might like to join our Marketing and Sponsorship sub-committee, which operates through the school year advertising Friends events, updating this website, writing for the school newsletter etc. Person spec: enthusiastic, likes tea and cake can attend an occasional meeting, handy with BlueTac/Sellotape/glue sticks/marker pens etc and can use a computer or would like to improve their computer skills.

5 September 2014

A warm welcome to all our new starters and welcome back to everyone else!  We hope you had a lovely Summer and wish you a happy start to the new academic year.

Coming up...

Each year we support Macmillan's World's Biggest Coffee Morning.  This year it's on 26 September.  There will also be a second-hand uniform sale, proceeds of which go to The Friends.  To make this a success we need as many of you as possible to bring in donations of cakes and to come along on the day.  If you can't come along or bring a cake, a financial donation will be welcome.

If you're interested in getting involved with The Friends of West Jesmond, a date will be announced soon for our AGM.  Please feel welcome to come along and meet other interested parents.  You are also welcome to put yourself forward for one of the committee roles, eg. Chair, Secretary, Treasurer etc.  We're also looking for more parents to join our Marketing Subcommittee which, as the name suggests, helps to organise Friends events etc.

And finally... you might be aware that West Jesmond has the most amazing tradition of making a selling cakes to raise money for each class.  This is known as The Friday Cake Stall.  This year, to encourage the baking and buying of even more fabulous cakes, the class that raises the most money with their cake stall will get afternoon tea provided by The Friends at the end of the academic year.  Happy baking!

[Did someone just say "cake"?]

Allotment Volunteer Day - whole school - Sunday 29 June

courgette flowerPlease come along to our School Allotment Day on Sunday 29 June(NB: this is a change of date from 8 June.)

It’s on between 10am-4pm, but please just turn up whenever suits you and stay for as long as you like.

The Friends are providing a free meat/veggie BBQ (so you might want to be there over lunch!).

New starters for September 2014: please feel welcome to come along too!

It’s always a lovely family outing, with plenty of jobs to be done and no experience necessary.  And, of course, the children love to “look after” the newts and frogs in the pond...

If you fancy yourself as a bit of a weight lifter, there are ten railway sleepers to be moved!

In case you didn't know, our school allotment is run by two amazing volunteers: Hugh and Jenny.  All the children at school go to the allotment through the year and some children use it on a weekly basis. Hugh and Jenny do an incredible job, but they need your help every so often to keep on top of the work. Thanks in advance for supporting this wonderful school resource!

(Access to the allotment is at the junction of Highbury and Mildmay Road in Jesmond.)
